Starbucks Coffee Company was founded in 1971, opening its first location in Seattle's Pike Place Market. Today, Starbucks, named after the first mate in Herman Melville's Moby Dick, is the world's leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee with coffeehouses worldwide. More than 11 million customers visit a Starbucks coffeehouse each week.
1971
Starbucks opens its first location in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, USA.
1982
Howard Schultz joins Starbucks as director of retail operations and marketing. Starbucks begins providing coffee to fine restaurants and espresso bars.
1984
Schultz convinces the founders of Starbucks to test the coffee bar concept in a new location in downtown Seattle. Overwhelmingly successful, this experiment is the genesis for a company that Schultz will found in 1985.
1987
Opens in Chicago and Vancouver, B.C.
